2025 Apiary Update
I probably should have been more active with my communications, but here we are on July 1st of 2025. We survived the winter and into the new year. One of my three colonies survived, as the other two were dead outs. Those two which perished were open bottom boards and had signs of them trying to propolizing the slatted board shut. The solid bottom board hive came out of winter booming with a huge brood. That overwintered hive was split into the other two hives, which have requeened and have honey supers on them jamming out honey production.
We expanded our apiary to an area right on the very edge of Wolfe’s Neck State Park by the farm area. These Hives are from packages I picked up from Royal Bees and Honey in Buxton. As I needed to get these hives going as soon as possible in the season when I got the green light back in early May. I couldn’t do splits as I wasn’t at that place yet for brood build up. They are Anel hives from Greece and are six times more thermal than the traditional wooden Langstroth hives. These hives have three deeps comprising each, two brood and a deep honey super they are actively drawing comb out. The location they are at is so ideal as they are secluded and in a protected area of state park farm land.
So far the season is off to a great start with at the moment five hives from a mix of Italian and Carnolian. We’ll have some honey in the very near future and have much work ahead of us. Loving the summer bee vibes and Freeport Maine tourist season here in the Village is in full swing! If you’re in the area of LL Bean Flagship store send us a message! Also feel free to check out our new webpage at beekeeper.artvandelay.net which will be going live in the very near future even if your not traveling as far as a honey bee.
